As many as 70-80% of the Class of 2022 students across top Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) including Delhi, Kanpur, Roorkee, Varanasi and Guwahati already have job offers 10 days into a record-breaking final placement drive.

Offers have surged by up to 60% at old IITs against last year on the back of intense competition for tech talent across sectors as the pandemic has accelerated adoption of technology and digitisation, campus placement cell members told ET.

Last year, about two weeks into the process, over 50% of students at the top seven IITs of Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Guwahati, Madras, BHU, and Roorkee had job offers, according to ET data.

Placement cells said there’s been a significant jump in companies signing up for this year’s virtual placements. In several cases, there has been a rise in individual offers per company. Result: the number of students already placed has increased by up to 50% at some institutes such as IIT Kanpur.

At IIT Delhi and IIT-BHU, the number of offers till now has surpassed the total number of offers last year. IIT Delhi has received over 1,100 offers. Last year, the institute received about the same number for the whole placement season, its placement cell said.

“It’s a sign of the economy recovering; many companies are also confident of significant growth in the coming years,” said V Ramgopal Rao, director of IIT Delhi. “There is also a backlog in recruitments that companies are clearing off, given that some were pretty guarded in their hiring last year because of Covid,” he said.

Anil Kumar Agrawal, professor in-charge, training & placement cell, IIT-BHU (Varanasi), said: “A big chunk of students got placed within the first three days itself as we saw a rush of offers. A lot more companies have come this time; there’s been a very strong response from recruiters across sectors.”

Till Day 9, the institute had 1,155 offers from 309 companies against 706 offers from 219 companies last year. As many as 938 students have accepted jobs till Day 10 against 862 in last year’s placement season, Agrawal said.

According to data from IIT Kanpur’s placement cell, there’s been a 58% increase in the number of offers, and 51% increase in students placed till the end of Day 8. At IIT Guwahati, over 832 students have been placed so far, compared to 731 in the whole of last season. IIT Kharagpur has received over 1,600 offers in the first 10 days, the institute said.

“As the process is being conducted online, it allows the companies as well as the institute to accommodate more with minimum logistical constraints,” said A Rajakumar, chairman, Career Development Centre, at IIT Kharagpur. “Companies are being able to interview more students across IITs and the institute is also engaging with more companies.” IIT Bombay crossed 1,200 offers in the first six days; IIT Roorkee had 1,171 offers as of December 10.

Companies that have rolled out multiple offers across campuses include Samsung, Microsoft, Amazon, Flipkart, Goldman Sachs, Uber, Qualcomm, Intel, HUL, ITC, JP Morgan, and Oracle, among others.

As reported by ET on Tuesday, it’s been a record-breaking placement season at IITs across various parameters – from the number of Rs 1 crore-plus packages to international postings and pre-placement offers.
