Axios will definitely comply with President Donald Trump’s order to relabel the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” the journal claimed in a declaration Friday.
“Our top priority at Axios is to provide readers with clinical, fact-based reporting,” Axios said in a statement. “Our standard is to use ‘Gulf of America (renamed by U.S. from Gulf of Mexico)’ in our reporting because our audience is mostly U.S.-based compared to other publishers with international audiences.”
After taking office final month, Trump approved an exec order altering the title of the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America.”
“The Gulf of America ― what a beautiful name,” Trump said during a news conference in very earlyJanuary “And it’s appropriate. We do most of the work there. It’s ours.”
Following the order, the Federal Aviation Administration revealed it would be changing the name to “Gulf of America” in all future graphes and maps. And expertise titans Google and Apple also announced they will surely remodel the title.
The Associated Press has been barred from White House access after the journal defined it will definitely not abide by the title modification.
“It is alarming that the Trump administration would punish AP for its independent journalism,” Julie Pace, the managing editor of AP, said in a statement beforehand as we speak. “Limiting our access to the Oval Office based on the content of AP’s speech not only severely impedes the public’s access to independent news, it plainly violates the First Amendment.”
In its declaration, Axios protected the AP’s selection.
“At the same time, the government should never dictate how any news organization makes editorial decisions,” the declaration claimed. “The AP and all news organizations should be free to report as they see fit. This is a bedrock of a free press and durable democracy.”
