United States Ends Sanctions Waivers for Russian, Iranian Oil
Washington– The U.S. will certainly not extend permissions waivers allowing countries to buy Russian and Iranian power, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Wednesday. The preliminary waivers, implemented after a U.S.-Iran problem set off power concerns, expire on April 19 th.
Key realities:
- Waivers at first given in March, allowing acquisitions of oil already at sea.
- India was a significant beneficiary, ordering about 30 million barrels of Russian oil.
- The choice ran the gauntlet from U.S. politicians, that argued it economically profited Moscow and Tehran and assisted in the war on Ukraine.
- The waivers will not be renewed.
